Independent Study Guide: 2017-18 EOC Project

In accordance with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for English I coursework, you will be required to complete the following English I EOC Project.  This project will be supported and graded by the English Department at MHS.

To recieve a 100 (or a maximum 110) to satisfy the graduation requirements:

  1. You must do each assignment from each point category.
  2. Design a cover page for the project. (Coloring some of the activities may be helpful, useful, and exhibit signs of creativity.) Cover page includes title, name, class period, English II EOC along with a design.  All assignments must be stapled together or put in a folder.
  3. Time will be spent out of class working on the project.  We will observe to make sure that you are managing your time and completing this project on time.

Criteria:  Each activity that you complete will be graded on the following:

  • Following directions
  • Accuracy
  • Organization
  • Appropriateness
  • Alignment to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for English I EOC

Required Reading:

  • 1984 by George Orwell (Science Fiction Novel)
  • A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (Science Fiction Novel)
  • “Hey, Teens: Your Parents are Probably Checking Your Faceboon by Adam Ostrow (Informational)
  • Little Brother is Watching You” by Walter Kirm (Online; Expository) from New York Times 
  • “Wired Homes Keep Tabs on Aging Parents” NPR Interview (Online)
  • “Big Brother is Always Watching Me” by Francis Duggan (Poem)
  • “TWe Are Living in 1984 Today” by Lewis Beale (Persuasive-Op Ed Piece) (Online)

Begin by  October 4, 2017

Obtain a copy of George Orwells’s book 1984.  (MHS Library Media Center has a copy or listen to it online.)

  • Read the novel and complete chapter summaries using a flow map with sub-categories to include important details.  Then type your chapter summaries from the information on your flow map.
  • Complete and type answers for two Depth and Complexity Task Questions on each chapter.  (These are available from the English Department or online)

Must be completed by November 30, 2017

Obtain a copy of Aldous Huxley’s book A Brave New World.  (MHS Library Media Center has a copy.)

  • Read the novel and complete chapter summaries using a flow map with sub-categories to include important details.  Then type your chapter summaries from the information on your flow map.

“Hey Teens: Your Parents are Watching You ” by Adam Ostrow

“Little Brother is Watching You” by Walter Kirn

  • Read and annotate both articles.  You must show evidence of a close reading.
  • Create a double-bubble map to show how these 2  article and the series of photos compare and contrast to George Orwell’s 1984.
  • Using your double bubble map, write a two page reflective essay in which you compare and contrast the 2 articles to 1984.  Use MLA Format.

“Wired Homes Keep Tabs on Aging Parents” NPR Interview

  • Read and annotate interview.  You must show evidence of a close reading.
  • Write a one page essay in which you offer another solution to the problems presented in this interview.  Use MLA Format.

“Big Brother is Always Watching Me” by Francis Duggan (Poem)

  • Read and annotate the poem.
  • In 10 typed lines, answer the following question:

What is the dilemma the character faces?  Provide evidence to support your thinking. 

  • Write your own poem that has a similar theme and follows the same elements.

“We Are Living in 1984 Today" by Lewis Beale (Persuasive-Op Ed Piece)

  • Read and annotate the article.  Make sure to point out the specific persuasive elements the author is using in this opinion piece.
  • Complete 1984 vs. “Today” Chart
  • Write an essay using the following prompt:

Do you believe we are living in a society that mirrors the themes and ideas in both 1984 and A Brave New World?

**This essay must be a minium of two pages; cite specific details from both novels, include a strong thesis statement and follow MLA Format.

Final Essay:  Use both 1984 and A Brave New World.

  • Write a 4 page essay in which you answer the following prompt:

What are some ideas, characteristics, or elements from both reading selections that will continue to be relevant or important in the future?
