Subject: Important Update: New Device Policy at Monahans High School
Dear Monahans High School Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you of an important change regarding our school's device policy for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. Effective immediately, students will no longer be permitted to bring their own personal electronic devices, such as laptops, iPads, or tablets to school. Due to HB 1481, MWPISD is in process of defining the new telecommunication device policy. Telecommunication devices include cell phones, smart watches, and any device capable of "telecommunication or digital communication.
Instead, MWPISD will be providing a school-issued Chromebook to every student for their academic use. This Chromebook will be assigned to your student and will be their primary device for all classroom activities, research, and assignments requiring technology.
This decision was made after careful consideration and extensive research into best practices for student learning and well-being in a technology-rich environment. Our primary goal is to ensure an optimal learning experience for all students, and we believe this new policy will significantly contribute to that. Here's why we are making this change:
- Minimizing Distractions: Research consistently shows that personal devices, with their access to social media, games, and other non-academic applications, can be a significant source of distraction in the classroom. By providing a school-managed device, we can better control the learning environment and help students focus on their studies.
- Equitable Access and Opportunity: While many of our students have access to personal devices, not all do. This new policy ensures that every student has equal access to the necessary technology and resources, eliminating potential disparities and creating a more equitable learning environment for all.
- Enhanced Cybersecurity and Data Protection: School-issued devices allow us to implement robust security measures and content filters that protect students from inappropriate content and potential online threats. This also helps safeguard student data and privacy more effectively than personal devices.
- Streamlined Technical Support and Compatibility: By standardizing on one type of device, our IT department can provide more efficient and effective technical support. It also ensures compatibility with our educational software and platforms, reducing technical glitches and maximizing instructional time.
We understand that this is a shift from previous policies, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we implement this important change. More information regarding the distribution, care, and responsible use of the school-issued Chromebooks will be provided before the start of the school year.If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Monahans High School administration
